Steve Potter Photography, Capturing Light, Moments & Stories in Manchester & Beyond

I’m Steve Potter, a commercial photographer based in M23 and working across Manchester. Photography has been part of my life for more than twenty years, and I still get a huge sense of excitement every time I pick up a camera. For me, photography is more than taking pictures — it’s about capturing light, freezing a moment in time, and telling a story that resonates with people.

Where My Journey Began
My passion for photography started around 2003 when I bought my first digital camera, a Canon 300D with its basic kit lens. At the time, I thought it was the best thing in the world. I’d been inspired by two close friends: one a hobbyist, the other a high-end commercial photographer. Although their work was very different, the quality and creativity they each brought had a lasting impact on me.

I’ve always admired artists who push boundaries — David Hockney in particular — for the way they use photography to change how we see the world. That influence, combined with my own growing love for light and detail, set me on the path I’m still walking today.
Building My Experience in Manchester
Over the years I’ve photographed a wide range of subjects across Manchester — from model shoots and street photography of skateboarders, to aerial drone images of iconic landmarks such as Central Library  and local viaducts. I’ve also worked on projects that celebrate the energy of motorsport and the intimacy of family portraits.

Outside of commercial work, I’m passionate about wildlife and nature photography. Waiting for the right conditions and capturing a fleeting moment — like the time I photographed a kingfisher exiting the water with a fish in its beak — is magical and keeps me motivated to refine my craft.
My Approach to Photography
For me, photography is about people as much as it is about images. I take time to build rapport, understand what matters to my clients, and plan carefully before every shoot. Discussing ideas, experimenting with techniques, and making clients feel relaxed in front of the camera are just as important as the technical setup.

I believe in delivering exactly what I promise, on time, and without compromise. One of my most rewarding experiences was producing a large canvas portrait of a mother and her daughters. When I delivered it, they were moved to tears of joy — a reminder that great photography can create memories as well as images.
Tools of the Trade
While the saying goes “the best camera is the one you have with you,” I’ve invested in equipment that helps me deliver the highest standard possible. I use Sony A1 and Sony A1 II flagship mirrorless cameras, paired with professional-grade lenses and editing software. This ensures precision, sharpness and colour accuracy in every project. Most importantly, I know how to use light — both natural and artificial — to bring out the very best in every subject.

Photography runs deep in my family too. My late father was a respected sports reporter at the Daily Express, with close connections to players and managers from both Manchester City and Manchester United. Growing up with that background gave me an appreciation for the power of images and stories — something I bring into my own work every day.
My Vision for the Future
I want every client who works with me to feel relaxed, confident, and assured that they’re in good hands. Photography is a two-way street built on trust, and I value that deeply. My mission is to gain wider recognition for my work while continually improving my craft, exploring new techniques, and capturing the people, places and businesses that make Manchester such a vibrant city.
